this article could be applicable to many people, including me(: it was published in the straits times yesterday. FAME! YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?
Money and power are handy, but millions of ambitious people are after something other than the corner office or a holiday home. they want to swivel necks, to light a flare in others' eyes, to walk into a crowded room and feel the conversation stop.
they are busy networking, auditioning, talking up their latest project, to satisfy a desire so obvious it is all but invisible.
"to be noticed, to be wanted, to be love, to walk into a place and have others care about what youre doing, even what you had for lunch today, thats wat people want, in my opinion." said My kaysar ridha,26. "its strange and twisted, because whn that attention does come, the irony is you want more privacy."
for most of its existence, the field of psychology has ignored fame as a primary motivator of human behaviour. it was considered too shallow, too culturally variable, too often mingled with other motives to be taken seriously.
.............
people with an overriding desire to be widely known to strangers are different from those who primarily covet wealth and influence. their fame-seeking behaviour appears rooted in a desire for a social acceptance, a longing for the existential reassurance promised by wide renown.
............
surveys in chinese and german cities have found that about 30% of adults report regularly daydreaming about being famous, and more than 40% expect to enjoyto enjoy some passing does of fame their "15 mins"...... the ratings are roughly equivalent to those found in A merican adults. For teenagers, the rates are higher.
Yet for all dreamers, only one or two in 100 rate fame as their coveted goal, trumping all others... "its a distinct type, people who expect to get meaning out of fame, who believe the only way to have their lives make sense is to be famous."
........
i only typed out some parts of it, cos the article is so long. well, you get the rough idea.
anyway, isnt is so true. many people i know do dream about being famous one day. and i cant deny that i use to be like that. hoping one day i can be someone who gets all the attention wherever i go. BUT, thats last time.
right now, what i want is to be different from others. living a life thats different from normal people. no matter whether it is a life that is difficult to live, i just want to be different.
currently, im still dreaming of going to harvard. and this dream is gonna stay for quite a while. hehe. cant help it, especially at this stage, i need something to motivate myself to work and work and work. well, it actually works, im starting to change my attitude towards certain things.
oh well, dreaming is dreaming, hoping is hoping, now, ive got to face the reality before i can get what i hope and dream for. and it is get back to studying. prelims is in 2 wks time, and i havnt started any particular revision !
byebye!
pardon me if there is any typing error, was typing rather quickly today ! (oops)
